If you think life is passing you by, it's time to catch up. The Good Life is closer than you think.

Self-Care: The First Sign of a Great Life

Editor’s Note: This is first in the 5 signs of a great life series.  Click on the introductory post for links to all 5 signs at the end of the series.

The first is the most obvious and also the one people most likely overlook.

In order to have a great life, you have to take care of yourself – physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Have you ever said any of the following?

  • “I’ll take some time for myself when the kids/husband/parents/friends/boss get through X/Y/Z.”
  • “I don’t look THAT bad.”
  • “I’d love to volunteer/take a class/read a book but I just don’t have the time.”

You may think by giving time to yourself that you shortchange those around you.  The reverse is actually true.

People who pursue hobbies, make time for friends, and nurture their bodies and minds are better equipped to give of themselves to others.

So, no more “but I’m a mom” excuses.  Or “he needs me more” talk.  Stop putting off the walk after dinner or giving in to the convenience of fast food.

Below are some inexpensive and easy ways to start taking better care of yourself.  You’ll be surprised to find how much more energy you have to give to others when you take the time to fill your own tank first.

  • Daily meditation for even just 15 minutes can center your mind.  Let Rodney Smith show you how.
  • Uncomfortable at a gym? Take it on the road! A daily 30-minute walk is good for your body and mind, and all you need is a good pair of shoes.  Google Maps now has walking routes available if you need help planning a route.  Make it more fun by walking with a friend.
  • Turn your television and computer off for 2 hours a day and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish: learn a new language, read a book a week, complete the crossword puzzle, call a friend, try a new recipe.

The bottom line:  Don’t defer your life.  If you want to pursue a hobby, do it now.  If you miss seeing your friends, make plans now.  If you feel sluggish and unhealthy, get some fresh air and avoid junk food.

You are in the driver’s seat.  You can stay on the same road you’ve been on or take a detour at the exit coming up…now!

This is a great post with such easy suggestions. Thanks for sharing.

For an easy way to come up with walking routes for that after-dinner walk, I’ve been using MapMyRun.com. They have an excellent map interface which allows you to draw routes around your neighborhood and it will tell give you distance and elevation data. This has been a good way for me to start walking and running around my neighborhood and track my progress by block.

PS: No, I don’t have any affiliation with MayMyRun, it’s just a cool site. :)

Great points Betsy. Now more than ever we must make ourselves a priority. I can’t wait for 2-5!

Alan, thanks for the link to MapMyRun. I’m going to use this to liven up my daily walk with Max.

Debb, tomorrow’s post deals with money, so you especially are going to like it.

  4. LOVE this new blog. So refreshing! And a good reminder to me engage in my own life rather than work away all the time. Thanks. : )
