It is always sad to think of someone who has worked his or her whole life and then at the point of retirement a health crisis or early death puts a stop to the dreams they had always put off til later. You are wise for taking the time to travel now and pursue your dreams of living in the UK. I'm so sorry about your parents but I am so happy for you for taking a different path. You should check out another reader Laura at http://www.movetoportugal.org. She is working on the same kind of plan to sell her house in the UK and move to Portugal, and she's almost there. He would have loved to have travelled, but never got around to it. Less than 2 years after he retired at 60, he died. Mum died at 60. I've travelled quite a lot now as travel is very important to me and I want to do as much of it as posssible before it's my turn to go - hopefully not at 60! Our aim is to sell our house and move to the U.K. within the next 5 years, and travel as much as possible. I'm off to explore your blog some more! Thanks for the inspiration. SammyLeia. We initially thought of renting it out, but the numbers didn't really make sense for us. With our mortgage and HOA fees, we would lose money every month because we couldn't rent it for that amount, especially if we hired someone to manage it for us. We knew if we sold in a down market we'd also lose money. It really came down to ripping the bandaid off slowly or quickly, and we chose the quick method so we could eliminate the worry on our trip. The amount of money we lost over selling it was roughly the same as the amount we would have lost over renting it at a loss over time. Hi, Tony. I am rapidly coming to that conclusion myself, and it's going to be a helluva ride. Just curious on one point - why did you decide to sell your house, rather than rent it out? Nice fireside story.
