Julie & Julia & Betsy & You

Imagine there was a movie made about your life.  Not the life you already have, but the life you have just started.

Well guess what?  I just saw my movie!

Julie & Julia is the story of the blogger who spent a year cooking Julia Child’s recipes and writing about them in her blog.  Along the way, she grew as a person, deepened her relationships, and even gained more confidence in herself.  And she learned to cook!

Now, I don’t really want to learn to cook like Julia (sorry, Warren), but the idea of a year-long experiment to test my limits is very attractive.  And there were so many parallels in the movie:

  • Julia Child had a true partnership with her husband, and so do I.  He called her “the butter on my bread,” and that is certainly the way I feel about Warren.
  • Julie the blogger had some really successful friends, and they pushed her to be the writer she said she wanted to be (not always nicely, but that’s the movies for you).  My friends are incredibly supportive, and they were the first readers of this blog.
  • I’m still not sure what I want this to turn into.  All I know is that I want to write about this entire experience.  Julie Powell didn’t know what her blog would be either, or how it would impact her.

As I was watching the movie I saw our trip around the world as the cookbook.  Can South America be overdone?  Will we add enough spice to Asia?  As Julia Child would say:  “What will I dooooooooo?”

I hope you get a chance to see the movie and think about undertaking your own one-year experiment.  What will you do?  How will you document your progress?  Who will hold you accountable?

Thank you again for reading and commenting.  I love sharing this experience with all of you!

Great ideas Betsy! I momentarily forgot about all our “one-year experiment” discussions so long ago – and I love the way yours is playing out! Who knew Mr. Betsy was actually Stanley Tucci?!?

And I also find myself imitating that phrase constantly too – “what will I doooooooooo?” Very contagious and hilarious too!

  2. Betsy says:

Karen, what is so funny about this is that I have actually had a crush on Stanley Tucci for YEARS. And to think I’m now married to him is just…well, delicious! ;-)

I do remember our conversations and thought about you during the movie. And now we’ve both jumped into something new and we’re blogging about it – how cool is that? For readers who don’t know, Karen has a blog called about her transition from personal chef to social media maven for restaurants and food companies. Check it out!

Oops, the blog is called Life is a Buffet. I messed up the name, but the link is good. (This is why I am not a coder.)

  4. Betsy… My wife and I also enjoyed the movie. I did think of you and your husband’s world tour and blogging about it during the movie. I plan on following you and enjoying your trip vicariously, so don’t let us fans down.

The movie also gave me new inspiration to make my blog more central to my life. Now I can claim as some of my original inspirations to start and to continue blogging came from Betsy and Julie. …Howard

Howard, you can bet we’ll keep blogging on the road. I’m not sure I could have kept up the pace to do all of Julia’s recipes in a year, but I guess taking a shot at seeing the world in a year is pretty ambitious, too! Thanks for stopping by, and good luck making the blog more central to your life. It can be very addictive!
