Michele Conlin and Colin Beavan of No Impact Man
Have you heard of No Impact Man (Colin Beavan)? This is the guy who convinced his family to try living one year without making an negative environmental impact. This meant no electricity, no television, no trash, and no motorized transportation (including elevators and escalators). He wrote a blog and a book about the experience (subtitled “The Adventures of a Guilty Liberal Who Attempts to Save the Planet and the Discoveries He Makes About Himself and His Way of Life in the Process”), and now he has a movie coming out called No Impact Man.
What I find most appealing is the story of how their marriage survived. After all, his wife was a Starbucks lovin’ material girl and he had a 2-year-old daughter. There’s a lot to learn here:
- Becoming a good steward of the planet
- Learning to be happy with what you have
- Adjusting to voluntary and involuntary changes in life and in relationships
I’ve read about him, seen the movie trailer, and now I want to see the movie. So does Kate over at An Exercise in Frugality (Kate writes about being frugal while being green). Since we live just a few miles apart, we’re going to meet up and go to the movie together on Friday, September 25, when it opens at the Landmark Varsity Theater in Seattle.
If you are interested in No Impact Man, a discussion about living lightly on the earth, or to just meet me or Kate (I’m anxious to meet her now that we’ve been emailing/commenting with each other for a few months), please let me know in the comments. Colin Beavan will be at University Bookstore after the movie for a question-and-answer session, and I’d love to see you at one or both of the events.
Hey, I think this makes this our first Married with Luggage Live Event, and I’m excited about doing it with An Exercise in Frugality. How cool is that? Hope to see you there!
