I was 16 or 17 when I heard a report of a study that said it cost over $100K to raise a kid from age 0 to 18. I recall at the time thinking "F that - I'm going to spend that money on myself". Totally selfish, and I continue to embrace the decision. Especially as kids are a lot more expsive now and I have things to do with my life.

The fact that we are the descendants of hundreds of thousands of generations of successful breeders does not mean that we are required to breed.

nrhatch, I agree that our personal lives should not be held open for a vote. No one would agree on anything anyway, so we'd all just be standing around waiting for a consensus!

Darcey, I like the way you put this: "how you live your life will determine the outcome of how people treat the subject." True for having children or not and every other lifestyle decision.

Selfish? To whom?

It is not selfish to do what you want to do, it is selfish of others to expect you to do what they want you to do.

To be, or not to be, parents is a personal decision, like many other decisions we face in life, which need not be held open for a vote.

Betsy I don't know how I missed this one. As you might have seen from my recent FB update, we joined the Child Free NYC Meet up group here. It was refreshing to meet people who have made a conscious and educated decision about their lifestyle. This is something g I was so hoping we would find here moving to NYC.

I decided by the age of 15 that I didn't want to grow up and be someone's mommy. That later translated into my favored response to the baby question; "I have a lot to give this world but children aren't one of them". I have done all I can to walk that talk and in addition to having been a board member for 10 years for the Boys & Girls Club I mentor, coach, volunteer and genuinely live a conscious life. As an entrepreneur it's commonly thought of that my business is the child I never have. And my 15 year long marriage is a full time commitment. I think how you present your decision along with how you live your life will determine the outcome of how people treat the subject. I am unapologetic in my response because I know I don't live a selfish life.

[...] Is it selfish to not have kids? This post grew out of an interview I did with Delicious Day on the choice to not have children. I heard back from people with and without kids, and the overriding theme seems to be there is no right or wrong answer to this question. The important thing is to live a life that is true to you. I loved doing this interview. [...]

The world is way overpopulated. You can find statistics and see that in about the last 200 years we've gone from 1 billion to almost 9 billion. http://www.geohive.com/earth/his_history1.aspx I'm totally in favor of population control! Okay, that sounded worse than how I meant.

Other than kids, doing what you want, "being selfish," is not bad at all, so long as you don't infringe on other people.
