Matt, it is a hugely bonding experience to save and plan for something big like this together. Warren and I like to spend money on different things, but when we finalized our shared goal, it became much easier to bypass those individual things in favor of the joint savings goal. Talking about it, sharing it with friends, and keeping track of your savings with your family (and what that amount will buy in terms of your goal) is really motivating.

One thing to keep you on track is to just stay away...don't go to malls, look at catalogs, or watch commercials. You will be amazed at how little you want to buy when you don't have the encouragement from advertisers. You will also be surprised at how quickly you will want to buy something if you do go to a store or view a catalog (even after months or years of saving).

Outta sight, outta mind!

Betsy, this was a fantastic series. Finances is probably the biggest point of contention between my wife and I. I've never been someone to spend money on things (unless it's camera equipment) but with the family dynamics of wife and kids it's been hard to get everyone lined up and onboard for getting serious about our sabbatical. This series really spoke to us about what it is we need to do and how hard it is to get out of the consumeristic frame of mind that we are all conditioned to live in. I've got my weaknesses (camera equipment) and my wife has hers (purses, hats and shoes) and we've come to realize those are hard cycles to break out of. But when we think about the end goal, thae payoff at the end I think we can do this. We have to do this.

I love the section on selling your junk as that is a big part of our financial plans for moving to Indonesia. I also like your ideas for enjoying life on a budget. I love the soup party idea and potlucks are fun. Your ideas for celebrating holidays is welcome as we have kids that always want this or that. While they may not understand in the short term why they don't get that toy they just saw so gloriously animated on TV, I hope that in the long run as they get to experience the world they will realize what is truly important in life. I'm so glad that I found your site as it's been a wealth of information as we plan out our own journeys. Hope to see you on the road in Indonesia.
