Buzzylittlebee, I'm so glad the information is helpful to you. Keep in mind that you have to keep a little bit of "cushion" in your budget for fun or indulgence or you will soon start to resent your spartan lifestyle. For example, we like to have wine with dinner so we kept that in the budget (though at a reduced rate). (and our favorite frugal blogger helps us out with Wine Finds!)

Please keep us posted on your efforts to get out of debt and contribute more dollars and time to the causes you believe in. I love a good success story!

Great post. I am thrilled that your (and my) favourite frugal blogger linked me through to this blog.

In one of life's strange coincidences, this blog content is so 'spot on' in terms of where we are right now.

I have recently been taking a hard look at our spending, and just last night decided I still needed to further audit our spending, cut out everything that we don't absolutely need, and get our debt situation under control.

Our dream as a family is to live frugally, so that we can give all the extra away - that could be extra money, because we earn more than we need, or extra time, because we are not having to work extra hours to earn money that we then spend on things we don't need! I also personally have resolved to work towards becoming a published author (novelist).

I look forward to reading more, thanks for the inspiration and encouragement!

These are good tips, EZS. We've made some tough decisions about what to keep and what to slice as well, and it is always a balancing act. We are considering a CSA delivery as well since my favorite frugal blogger has been raving so much about hers over the last 6 months: http://myyearwithoutspending.blogspot.com/2009/10/its-csa-day-hooray.html

Thanks for sharing your tips. Stay tuned next week for some specific details of how we are saving money for our trip.

Nice posts.

A 'life changing event' is a great trigger for trimming down and consolidating the spending. Yours is the travel; mine was moving for work.

We were (foolishly) spending money on DSL, DirecTV, local phone and long distance phone. One of my first changes was slicing the phone bill dramatically by moving to Vonage. http://www.evilzenscientist.com/blog/2008/05/16/vonage/

Since then we've sliced the DirecTV to almost nothing - and that's going to get whacked pretty soon too.

The grocery/food thing is an interesting one. We've done the Tiny Organics CSA for a couple of years here - and that's been a great investment. I also prepare most of what we eat from scratch. The one thing that surprised me was getting a bread machine - I use it to make dough and loaves - the purchase price of the bread machine will be written down by the end of November.
