When people ask, I tell them I gave my husband the best gift he'll ever get when I gave him a free pass on Valentine's Day. I consider it a commercial holiday used to make people feel guilty and bad about their relationships, and I don't want any part of it! Whenever I tell a male friend that, he seems very envious, because he's trying to figure out what to do/buy/arrange at the last minute, and worried he'll be in the dog house if he doesn't get it right.... oh, and re: Valentine’s Day. Most people are in the same boat, especially if they're in their 30s or 40s- they've got plenty of stuff, they're trying to simplify, maybe save for something else. And they've got so many relatives to buy for, they don't want the stress of shopping for the perfect gift for a friend. This year I'm on The Compact (Buy Nothing New), so I have to be more creative. Over the past few years, our list has been cut way back to close relatives and a few good friends. I like to give friends baked goods, a mix CD, or a book I love. This year I'm making homemade egg nog (boozy!), rosemary jelly, and beaded bracelets along with the regular cookies and pumpkin bread. I also throw a dessert party, which isn't a gift but a lot of fun. For my husband, he's going to get a handmade bracelet, a pound of hand-picked See's candy- his favorites, a book I know he'll like, and I'm cutting my hair short and putting in a blue streak.
