Words to live by

Do you like famous quotes? I do, and it seems like every couple of weeks I find a new favorite, which I scribble on a pink index card and keep on my desk until a new one comes along. It takes me that long to really think about it, appreciate, and apply it to my life (with varying degrees of success).

In honor of Thanksgiving in the US this week, I want to share with you the current quote on my desk.

“Feel that you have enough and your sense of hunger will diminish.” ~ Barbara Ann Kiefer

I found this quote on Twitter and it resonated in a couple of different ways.

  • My weight has always been a struggle for me, even when it is where I want to be, because I have a tendency to live/eat/love with a lot of gusto.  Living and loving with gusto turns out pretty good.  Eating, not so much.
  • As we get down to the nitty gritty in donating and selling our possessions, I’m becoming a little freaked out.  These are things that used to define me.  Correction:  These are obviously things that still do define me to some degree, or else I wouldn’t have so much trouble giving them up.

This quote reminds me that my sense of “enough” in all things – food, possessions, relationships – is largely set by me.

Do you have a favorite quote?  What does it mean for you?  Please share in the comments.

  1. Margit Crane says:

One of my all-time favorite quotes is “To the world you may only be one person, but to one person you may be the world.”

I think it’s hard to think that we can make a difference in the midst of so much adversity, but this quote reminds me that it’s not my job to wave my sword alone and battle earth’s demons. But it IS my job to be present for other people, even if I don’t know why or how it’s going to make a difference. We may never know the impact we have on others but we get to be present for them anyway.

And, fortunately for me, I’ve seen this to be true time and again in my work as a teacher, school counselor and family coach.

What a perfect quote for someone who spends her days helping teenagers! It is true, we don’t often appreciate the impact we have on others.

  3. Maria Ross says:

    4 of my faves:

    “Well-behaved women rarely make history”
    (Laurel Thatcher Ulrich)

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” (Eleanor Roosevelt)

“Do what you feel in your heart to be right- for you’ll be criticized anyway. You’ll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.” (Eleanor Roosevelt)

“Wine is a constant proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” (Benjamin Franklin)

    Happy Turkey Day everyone!

Those are great, Maria! The first one is also one of my faves and made it to a pink index card a long time ago. :)

  5. My favorite quote, which I use all the time, is from Henry Ford “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, either way you are right”.

  6. Betsy says:

That’s a good one, Nancy, and so true.
