A name doesn’t always convey a company’s attitude, so they usually create a tagline to help round out their corporate personality. You’ve heard these before, and the really famous ones don’t even need a company name anymore.
Just do it.
You’re in good hands.
Because I’m worth it.
The same can be true for blogs and even people. Dan Pink’s new book Drive talks about just that – creating a sentence that states your big objective in life.
Our original tagline was “pare down, save up, and get out.” It was pretty self-explanatory and mirrored what we were doing in our lives. The blog was originally started as a way to document this process for our friends and family since we couldn’t find a “Dummies” book on how to run away from home and travel the world.
Over time, our readership has grown and we’ve learned quite a bit about preparing for a huge life change.
- We’ve saved money – a lot of it. In fact, over half our income.
- You don’t need nearly as much stuff as you have. Trust me on this.
- Surround yourself with quality people and be one yourself.
It doesn’t just apply to travel, and over time we’ve attracted a lot of readers who don’t even care about travel. They care about changing their lives in positive ways and pursuing their own dreams.
We’ve made tweaks the blog all along, and this week we are unveiling our new tag line:
Life is short. Live your dream.
As wordy as I am, it may surprise you to see something so brief. But it does convey what we want for ourselves and for all of you: to seize the life you have, make it as good as it can possibly be, and to spread your love and happiness to those around you.
Thank you for reading our blog. We are humbled and challenged by you every week, and we work very hard to make this a place you want to visit.
So now that you know our tag line, what’s yours?

Love the new tagline. It absolutely captures the essence of your message.
Hi Betsy,
This is great. It reminds me of something I used to have on my wall.
“Life is short. Live it up.” — Nikita Khrushchev
Frankly, I don’t know where I got this quote (possible from the “What I Learned in Kindgergarten” book). I also have no idea if the attribution is accurate. But HELLO? Nikita Krushchev?! Cold war?! That says something right there.
I also made a temporary tattoo once, so I could WEAR my tagline on my body. It said:
Give love.
Have faith.
Let go.
Cheers & awesomeness to you!
All the best,
shea
Great minds! My blog’s tagline is “Life is short. Don’t wait.”
Amy, thanks for your feedback. Nice to know we are on the right track.
Shea, I couldn’t believe that quote was Khrushchev! I actually googled it and found several resources, so it probably is accurate. (the internets don’t lie, do they?) Love your temporary tattoo, especially the “letting go” part. That’s the hardest for me.
Deonne, it is nice to find a like-minded blogger out here in the interwebs. I love the name of your blog (Life on the High Wire) – have you seen the documentary Life on Wire? Really spectacular to think of what that guy did to achieve his dream. Well worth watching. One my favorite quotes from it was “You have to live on the edge of life.”
I love the new tagline. I’m not sure what mine is but I seem to go between, “The life and times of a monkey on a mission” or “A travel blog with a twist, a tail and some fur” Neither of these two are inspiring as yours though.
Are you kidding? I love them both! They are creative and make me want to learn more – which is what you want, eh? Plus, everyone loves a monkey.
I love it! It’s perfect!
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and I’ve got mine narrowed down to two:
Because more isn’t necessarily better, or
Because excess isn’t sexy.
Just don’t know if I want to introduce “sexy” into the equation, but I think it’s funny, and it’s something I actually said over 10 years ago.
A friend and I were arguing over whether or not excess was sexy, and I was on the “no” side.
I like it, Angela! Because excess isn’t sexy. And adding “sexy” into the equation gives it some style. Let’s face it, most people don’t think saving money or working toward a goal is sexy, though they like the result of it. Let’s bring sexy back!
Betsy, I like the tagline! But I like your other “pare down, save up…” tagline, too!
I couldn’t figure out a good tagline, so I made my blog with a caption I can change anytime! Right now it says “Life simplistic: 15-pound pack, a good book, no phone, no job, good food, around the Pacific Rim”
Brook, you don’t need a tagline with a caption like that! I’m dreaming of the life simplistic just from reading it.
Betsy – I loved Man on Wire, and found his obsession both inspiring and heartbreaking. But there are days when I’m immersed in writing (my obsession) to the exclusion of relationships and good hygiene (ha), and I understand Philipe Petit and what he did for his art.
Deonne, I love your comment. It is sometimes a fine balancing act between pursuing our passions and maintaining our relationships (and hygiene).
