Video Post: 3 Lessons for Losing a Lot of Weight

This is part of our ongoing series called “Of course you can do it!”

No matter what your lifestyle goal, it probably doesn’t include being overweight or out of shape. This is a struggle very near and dear to me, and I was amazed and inspired on my last visit to mom’s to see how great she looked after a 60-pound weight loss. Mom has struggled with her weight all her adult life, and she shares 3 tips in this video that finally pushed her from wanting to lose weight to actually doing it.

I learned a few things and think you will, too. (if you are reading this via email you may need to click through to the post to view the video)

Video 1 Summary:

1:21 What Mom thinks made it work for her this time

2:20 How to get back on track when you fall off the wagon

3:40 Is there ever a good time to start a diet? How do you handle stressful events?

5:00 How Mom deals with emotional food cravings.

Video 2 Summary:

0:00 Where does exercise fit in, and how important is it in the overall scheme of things?

1:28 Benefits of working out with a partner

2:58 How the weight loss has impacted her previous health problems.

3:35 Three lessons for successful weight loss

4:30 Bonus lesson on patience

A big thanks to my mom, Connie Gray, for being so agreeable to a 10 p.m. interview after a long day of activity. My apologies for the bad angle on the camera – I forgot the tripod. Done is better than perfect, right?

My commitment to weight loss is renewed, and I’ll be reporting back to you all on my weight loss over the coming months. Want to join me? Just say so in the comments.

Tried to watch the video but got a notice that it had been removed because it was too long. (more than the 10-minute limit) I’m hoping you can edit a bit and put it back up because I, too, struggle with weight loss and would like the inspiration.
    Thanks!

  2. Betsy says:

Hi, Amy. I’m going to pull it down and edit it a bit, and in the meantime I’ll post an oldy-but-goody from a while back. Look for this video post on Wednesday, and thanks for your patience.

  3. Betsy says:

Okay, I finally got my act together. Note to self: Youtube videos cannot be longer than 10 minutes. Hope you enjoy the videos!

Funny, we got in shape with diet and exercise before we left on our career break and 7 months later (and still on the road) we are so blubbery from all of our eating. Seems like everywhere we go, we want to try everything and we forget that travel food has calories too. You would think that hiking a lot would do the trick but I guess you have to hike daily and we don’t. At any rate, we are fat and happily traveling. Isn’t that what it’s all about. Just found your website via briefcase to backpack–looking forward to keeping up with your adventures….enjoy!!!

  7. Brook says:

My story is opposite of Christine. I would bloat up when overworked. When I quit my job last Summer and traveled SE Asia, I dropped about 25 pounds over 4 months. I returned to the US for a few months and gained almost 15 of those pounds back! Now, having been traveling in SE Asia again the past 2 months, I’ve dropped that 15.
In the US, I eat pizza hut, Arbys, homemade Oreo Butterfinger shakes, and drive everywhere. I also worked out a lot, but not enough to overcome the diet. On the road, I eat rice and meat, and do a lot of walking. It’s really that simple for me!
Good luck and I hope to see some updates during your traveling!

Love love love this video! I joined Weight Watchers a few weeks ago but had fallen away from tracking because we’ve been so busy lately with buying a new house and readying to move. It’s just so stressful! I had let myself off of tracking points. After watching this video I got right back on the WW website and tracked my food for today. Thanks Betsy and Connie!
