If you think life is passing you by, it's time to catch up. The Good Life is closer than you think.

The soundtrack of your life

Think back to your first big romance, your first solo road trip, or even a special memory with family or friends. What do all these events have in common? Music.

Photo by Hryck. via FlickrFor most of us, music plays the same role in our lives that it plays in movies; it narrates, sets the mood, and indicates what might be around the corner (think Jaws music here). Just like a scent, a clip of music can instantly remind you of your good times, teenage angst, and even how you got through a bad time.

My friend Donna is an extreme athlete, college student, mom, and all-around fabulous person. She often updates her Facebook status with inspiring quotes, questions, and song lyrics, and this post is a result of her question:

If you had a music soundtrack for your life, what songs would be on it?

I can think of several travel/transition themed songs that illustrate our life* right now (click here to watch them on YouTube):

  • Hit the Road, Jack by Ray Charles
  • Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey
  • Take Me as I Am by Mary J. Blige
  • Change of Season by Hall & Oates
  • Everybody Got their Something by Nikka Costa
  • With a Little Help from my Friends by Joe Cocker
  • My Way by Los Lonely Boys

What songs capture your favorite moments in life?

*Warren will probably want me to point out these are my song choices. We have a lot in common, but you wouldn’t know it by comparing our iPods. I always tell him the only good taste he has is in women.

I did this as an assignment years ago for school or from a counselor/ therapist or something or the other… it was really fun to piece together all those songs!

But I haven’t thought about it recently, and I’m sure my song choice would be much different than it was ten years ago. Great choice of songs you have!

    • Betsy says:

That’s the cool thing about this exercise in that the soundtrack is constantly evolving. I didn’t know that “Take Me As I Am” would evolve from a soundtrack to a relationship to a soundtrack to my relationship with the world.

  2. Jamie says:

I’m partial to a couple of Dixie Chick’s song:

    Wide Open Spaces
    The Long Way Around

    • Betsy says:

Jamie, we are on the same page – I love a great song by a strong woman (or women), and the Dixie Chicks are definitely that. Sometimes the song is just as much about who is singing it and what he or she means to you, don’t you think?

  3. Margit says:

    Some of mine have been:

“Wild World” and “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens (actually a lot of his songs)

“Happiness Runs” by Donovan (i’m dating myself!)

“Happiness runs in a circular motion
thought is but a little boat on the sea.
everybody is a part of everything anyway
you can have everything if you let yourself be.”

  4. Abigail says:

What a great message, Margit. I can see how this fits you perfectly.
