Arriving at the end of the earth

We made it! We crossed the Antarctic Circle at 8:10 a.m. local time today, and soon after we spotted our first icebergs. After 60 hours of traveling with no visible land, this was a welcome sight. You just can’t believe the gorgeous hues of blue and white floating in the icy ocean.

Until now we’ve been in a waiting mode as we crossed the choppy Drake Passage, and we’ve spent our time learning a bit more about Antarctica from the onboard experts as well as getting to know our fellow passengers.

These are the kind of people who lead pretty adventurous lives, from extensive travel to remote places, to sailing around the world, to swimming with whales. There are as many stories as there are people on board, and it is has been fun (and inspiring) to get to know them on our journey.

Still to come:

  • Our first Zodiac boat ride
  • Our first landing on Antarctica
  • An overnight camping trip with 18 other hardy souls

Heading out now to see the killer whales…stay tuned for more!

  1. overnight???? brrrrr. that’s pretty much like walking around Seattle lately. It’s Antarctica cold here.

  2. I love jumping photos, so awesome.

  3. So glad you made it! It looks very cold! We are having typical New Mexico weather today. The winds are expected to be 70 mph at times and March isn’t even here yet. I cannot wait to hear more about Antarctica and everything you will discover there. I love you! Stay warm Baby Girl!

  4. Awesome! Glad you made it through the Drake Passage safely! Can’t wait to read more.

  5. Happy people in happy pictures make me happy, too! If I hadn’t seen the photo on your Facebook page, I wouldn’t have believed that an iceberg could be that blue.

  6. Whoa! Congratulations! I love jumping shots!

I had the opportunity to photograph on the North Slope in Alaska, years ago, about 900 miles above the Arctic Circle, back then it was all film and ¾ in video tape. Temps well below zero, so cold the lubricant on my zoom lens became so viscous, made it almost inoperable. The strange quality of light was stunning. The extreme temperatures will zap your battery (at least that’s what I experienced). Good luck you two and can’t wait to see the photographs

  8. This might just be my favorite picture yet. You guys are adorable! I get happy just thinking about you and what you’re doing right now.

  9. Simone Cannon de Bastardo says:

Hey, where’d you get the idea for a jumping pic? :-)

    • Sim, because of you guys and Ayngelina with Bacon is Magic, we’ve decided to add a few jumping pics along the way. I’m not a very good jumper yet, so I’ll need to practice a lot. :)
