Cost of Traveling Around the World for a Year

We have completed an amazing year on the road and looking back we cannot believe what fun we had. What surprises us even more was how little we spent during our 365 days traveling around the world. As you know each month since we left we have been tracking our expenses and sharing them with you in a transparent effort to give you an idea of what it costs to live our dream. With the end of our first year we have compiled all the numbers and have just posted our Year 1 Summary over at RTW Expenses. Take a look for details on what we spent, how much we spent on each category, and our tips for saving money while on the road.

You know how we spent it, but if you are interested in how we saved the money for this adventure check out our soon to be released book, Dream Save Do.

  1. This is one of my favorite pictures from your entire year!! :)

    • Kristin,
Thank you for the compliment. Ironically, we took this picture while we were stuck in Pasto for 9 days trying to up to Cali to meet you. We had a lot of free time so decided people needed to see what we were carrying around. We love to know you like this picture as well. Though I admit we would have traded the picture for the opportunity to meet you and then see more of Colombia.

  2. Is Betsy’s pack bigger because of all her make-up?

    • Too funny. Nope, we have exactly the same size backpacks. At the time her’s was filled with a wrap we bought in Otavalo which made it quite puffy. By that is now gone and her pack has slimmed down nicely.

  3. RTW well done! Thanks for also posting your anticipated budget as well as what you actually spent. Great tips and details.

    • Maria, it is great to know when the stuff you put out into the world actually helps. Thank you for the encouragement to keep tracking these costs and sharing them with you guys. We’ll keep it up and look forward to the the future.

  4. What is truly amazing to me is that it’s been MORE THAN A YEAR that I’ve been traveling with you guys!

I remember watching you ready for departure, and your first video, and your treks through South America, etc. And now the wheel of the year has come full circle already.

Glad that you came in under budget. Enjoy the occasional splurges!

    • Nancy, we feel exactly the same way. There are times where we are absolutely shocked that it has been a year since we left Seattle. Then we look back at everything we have done this year and are shocked that we did it all in a year. Funny to see both sides. The one thing we are sure of is life is good and we have no complaints!
