Rolf Potts, veteran traveler, author, and coiner of the phrase “vagabonding,” is off to do something new. He’s going to take a 6-week trip around the world with nothing but his toothbrush and what he can fit in his pockets. I just recently bought a Scottevest for our big trip, so I’m excited to see how he utilizes his to carry everything he needs. You can follow along on his journey at RTWblog.com.
What do you consider “essential” for your travels?

I actually came across his website yesterday. I was AMAZED by what he is going to do. It really makes you think twice before you pack your bags. If he can go 6 with just a tooth brush then Im sure I can go a year with alot less than I had originally thought I would need.
You are reading my mind, Jaime. We are 41 days from departure, and I’m already rethinking what I need. Just on this 9-day trip to see the family, I have not worn all the clothes I brought in my backpack - and I did a last-minute purge before I left for the airport. It will be fun to watch his journey and see what lessons we can learn for our own trips.
Im excited to see a list of everything yall end up taking. Im sure its going to be interesting. You are right about not using everything you pack. Its like no matter how little you pack something is NOT going to be used.
Wow. This would be really cool to try. I think we would have run into problems without our zip ties and duct tape. But then again, these were really only to repair and protect all the items we were carrying! If you are packing luggage, besides the zip ties and the duct tape - buy a compact duffel bag for your backpack. Tons of travelers get their gear stolen while on the buses. We used a simple lock to keep the duffel shut. Plus, they protect the bag from the dust and grease of traveling. Now if you happen to be too lazy (like me) to put yours on while transferring in a Mongolian taxi and your pack winds up sitting in battery acid, tough luck. That’s what the zip ties and duct tape are for!
Love it! The last time I went on travel, I found myself debating whether a hairbrush was essential. Then I decided I was taking my minimalist approach to packing a little too far.
