How I See It: UK

Since we left on our trip over 8 months ago I have taken a few pictures. OK, I have taken a LOT of pictures. Betsy has been amazingly supportive throughout, patiently standing while I frame shot after shot on our hikes or walks through the city. In addition she has been gently pushing me to show off more of my pictures. Despite all this prodding I have never felt good enough about my work to showcase the pictures beyond a supporting role on Facebook and blog posts.

However, since you all have seen more of me than you may like in front of the camera, I’ve decided to start showing more of my perspectives from behind the camera. As a result, here are a few images taken since we landed in the UK that I enjoy.

This is Melrose Abbey, about an hour south of Edinburgh. The beautiful green grass contrasted with the 900 year old ruins makes for a wonderful afternoon of photography.

Some pictures you simply cannot plan. While standing in the backyard of our friends’ home this guy came up looking for some carrots. Without a thought I snapped a picture and love the result.

While Betsy was standing on the shore of the Avon River in Stratford the light was perfect. I love the look on her face as she looks out at the scene.

I love this image capturing the ruins of a small chapel on a hill in Edinburgh. In the background you can the modern buildings of the city while in front of you are the crumbling remains of history. Plus, this is one reason I love shooting in black and white so much.

It is hard to see this picture without being reminded of how quiet and peaceful this walk along the canal in Yorkshire was for us. I love walking early in the morning to capture water without ripples from a breeze.

Reflection picture

This one was not taken by me, but I love this picture so much I had to include it. Betsy captured me immediately after the first sip of a perfect pint.

As we continue our exploration I’ll continue to capture the memories along the way and stepping outside my comfort zone to share them with you. If you would like to see more of my images check out our Flickr page. Feel free to add your constructive criticism either here or on Flickr as I am constantly looking for ways to improve.

Wonderful pics, Warren. Love the horse one. Sometimes the best pics are the spontaneous ones. :)

    • Agreed. My favorite picture ever is one that was completely unplanned and where I just pointed the camera and clicked. Now it is the image on my credit card and makes me smile every time.

  2. Tranque Fuller says:

Fantastic pics, Warren! They make me want to be there and experience these places myself! Thanks for sharing them.

  3. Please make this a regular feature! I love your work - the canal picture especially makes me feel like I’m right there - and enjoy hearing the story behind each picture.

    • Becky, thank you for the comment and taking the time to express your thoughts on the pictures and the future of these posts. It means a lot to know that you enjoy the image. Going forward…more story.

  4. These pictures look great! It is so wonderful that you have been able to learn new skills and enjoy a new hobby. Keep them coming!

    • Hey Lisa, after 38 years without a hobby it was been a blast to embrace photography the last few years. I love the opportunity to see the world through a new perspective and then be able to capture it with the camera. It has been a lot of work and a lot of fun. Thank you for the support!

  5. Jim Talbot says:

Warren, your photographs are excellent! You really have a good eye! I appreciate your use of B&W, very expressive. Your use of near-far composition pulls the viewer into the photograph. Sometime when faced with an overwhelming vista we try to capture too much and end up with disappointing results. As long as the only one you are trying to please is you, your images will be outstanding. It’s all about the light! Keep up the good work. I look forward to more of your photographs.

    • Jimmy, since you were the first inspiration for me in photography I can’t tell you how nice it is to get your compliment. It is like having the writer you admire most telling you they like your book. Thank you for making my day and I promise to keep learning and taking pics along the journey.

  6. Amazing….OK, as part of your plan to make money so you can continue traveling, you need to license or sel these! They are amazing. If you set up something where Shutterfly can print them out and mail them to people for framing, I know that people would for-sure buy them. They are gorgeous!

    • I love this idea. Let me explore the possibilities here and start offering the prints up for people. Thank you for your encouragement.

  7. LOVE.

  8. Mamacita says:

Of course my favorite is my beautiful daughter lost in thought! Your photos are amazing and showcase so much of your travels for those of us at home. Keep up the good work!

  9. The small chapel pic is PERFECT!

  10. Please share more of your pics here! I love them and the captions!

  11. These are AMAZING!! You’re very talented.
Could be another way to make some extra cash, turn these into cards and/or sell prints!

  12. Jim Talbot says:

Hey Warren, you may want to visit the home of William Henry Fox Talbot at Lacock Abbey in Chippenham, Wiltshire. He is one of the early pioneers of photography.
