We are in the home stretch now, giving up almost all of our belongings before we move out this weekend. We interviewed each other on how we were feeling about this transition. One thing is for sure: no matter what your goal, you have to give something up to make room for the new thing/experience/activity in your life. You can’t have change if nothing changes!
Video: What it feels like to get rid of all your stuff

So glad to have had such a beautiful evening to say adios to a great space where a great friendship was forged.
And Warren…stop sneaking things into our bag!
Seriously, we have such tremendous respect for you both and this process - it is inspiring.
…oh and about Saturday….I think I am washing my hair!
Thanks, Debb. Saturday will be a weird day to watch all the things we’ve sold finally walk out the door. In a way it hasn’t seemed real yet because we still have a couch, dishes, etc. Reality is coming, though!
very cool!! congrats!!!
So happy for you both! This video is awesome and I love to see how the process is evolving - as are both of you!
I am still in denial that you won’t be here after October for parties, lunches, just hanging out…what ever will we all do?!?

+1
I LOVE this! I don’t think I could have filmed it when I was giving away and selling all of my stuff - it wouldn’t have been pretty. However, I coped with it by thinking about how every time someone walked out of my apartment with one of my hard earned possessions - it was now THEIR weight, THEIR ball and chain that would keep them here while I was free to go!
On a side note - I’m back in the US visiting friends in NYC and the friend that I’m staying with bought all of my bowls, glasses and silverware. Now, 2 years later I’m eating my cereal out of my old bowls with my old spoons…very weird!
Sherry, I’ve had this recurring problem of trying to talk people out of buying stuff because I don’t think they need it. I think everyone needs to declutter and downsize! This is why I’ve been demoted to stager/organizer and not allowed to do any negotiation.
Since my reverse birthday party a few months ago I’ve had the opportunity to see some of my things on other people at social events and it always makes me smile. You probably feel the same way about your cereal bowls.
hhahaahah, i like the video
congrats on your new place Besty:)
I just found your site though Briefcase to Backpack and I love it!
The getting rid of all our stuff was much harder than I thought it would be. I felt better once it was gone but the process sure was a beatdown.
I am really looking forward to reading about your travels.
Hi, Danielle. It has been hard getting rid of stuff, but I find it gets easier as time goes by. We’ve been downsizing pretty consistently for 4 years, in earnest for 2, and the only things freaking me out right now are our pets (who are going to good homes - but still).
I’m excited to discover your blog and see how the transition has gone for you now that you’ve returned.
