The Best is Yet to Come: 12 Steps to Reclaiming the Joy in Your Life

Do you ever feel like your best years are behind you? That if you haven’t achieved the life you want by now, you probably won’t?

Our email inbox is full of these kinds of laments, the kind of “hey, good for you guys, but it’s too late for me” messages that used to break our hearts.

We say “used to” because now they just piss us off.

What kind of world do we live in where you have to set up a perfect life by the time you’re 30 or you miss the boat?

Media messages, celebrities, and movies set the stage for a life of disappointment and frustration if you weren’t born a with a golden voice, a perfect body, or a trust fund. They make us believe the life you want is not possible if you didn’t go to the right school, have obedient children, or publish your masterpiece before you got your first gray hair. The belief seems to be that if you took a wrong turn somewhere along the way (and who hasn’t?) you will be denied entry back on the “right path” because of it.

Everyone screws up, hesitates when they should leap, loses something precious, misses an opportunity, and says the wrong thing to the right person. Everyone’s life is different than the future they imagined at 18. At least everyone we know, us included.

Are we all on the same page yet?

Good, because now we’re righting the ship, correcting the course, and recentering the target. It’s not too late for you to have the kind of lifestyle you want, and over the next 12 weeks we’re going to show you step by step how to do it.

Have We Already Peaked?

Back in 2006 our lives looked very different. We focused our time and energy into careers that we thought should be the #1 priorities for us both. What little we had left to give to each other was spent shopping for things we did not need in hopes it would fill the gaps in our lives.

As we look back to that time in our lives it’s easy to see the warning signs:

  • Neither of us were doing what we loved
  • We put everything else in front of our own happiness
  • We did not make time for each other
  • We let life carry us along without ever questioning where we were going
  • We let our health get out of whack

It was a dark time in our lives, and recently we sat down and talked about how we pulled out of it.

How did we go from blah in every category to systematically improving our life and relationship over the next few years? What foundation did we build to be able to achieve our biggest dream of traveling the world, as well as many of the smaller ones like writing books, learning a new language, and climbing mountains?

The answers might surprise you.

The Best is Yet to Come

Over long walks and talks the past couple of weeks, we’ve boiled our experience over these past 10 years down to 12 steps. Just 12 steps that anyone can take to markedly improve their lifestyle, whether that desire for change is small and specific or large and comprehensive.

Twelve steps. We’ve taken out all the wrong turns, bad experiments, and mistakes and distilled the essence of what constitutes a life change. Some of it we’ve talked about before in blog posts or podcasts or our books. Some of it we’ve never shared. And we’ve never compiled it together in a comprehensive format that anyone can use.

We’re calling it:

The Best is Yet to Come: 12 Steps for Reclaiming the Joy in Your Life”
