Resources

Want to know the specific tools we use to create our best life?

Glad you asked! You know us as testers, people who vet our choices and learn from our experiences. That extends to the products we use to create a lifestyle and business we love. Below are our favorites, those resources we use on a regular basis to enjoy our life to the fullest. These all come with the Married with Luggage seal of approval, and we’ve written a short note about why we like each product so you can decide if it fits your needs.

Travel

Trusted Housesitters: We are not overstating this: housesitting has been one of our best ways of seeing the world. Financially, it can’t be beat. From a cultural experience, you cannot find a better way to learn about a country than by getting a warm introduction from the homeowner, living in a neighborhood, and “trying on” the life of someone else. From the Andes Mountains in South America to the canals of Amsterdam to country manors in England and farmhouses in Portugal and Spain, we have experienced life in a way that regular travel doesn’t allow. If you want to see the world slowly, immerse yourself in someone else’s life for just a while, and do it on a budget, this is something you’ll want to check out. Be sure to use the code “married” without quotes to get your 25% discount when you register (though it is absolutely free to look through the listings and dream about what life you want to try on next!)
We have enjoyed taking care of people’s homes and pets in countries around the world. From a houseboat in Amsterdam to a rammed earth casa in the Andes of Ecuador this is one of our favorite ways to explore the world on a budget.
Eurail: Our favorite way to see the world is on foot. But since that’s not always practical, we often turn to our second favorite method: trains! Winding through the mountains, around lakes, and along the sea makes getting there half the fun. And if when going from Hamburg to Copenhagen, we even took the train right onto the ferry! A train pass allows for flexible travel, which is why we like it so much. We can stay longer in the places we like or change our minds completely with no penalty. We’ve traveled around Europe twice with Eurail, and we highly recommend this convenient pass if you want to visit multiple places in Europe on your next holiday. Click here to find out more about Eurail train passes.
Kindle Reader: If you’re going to travel like we do, take all your books in one small, lightweight reader. For one, the reduction in weight will make your travels easier. For another, you simply won’t be able to easily find books in English on your travels (unless you count the dogeared copy of 50 Shades of Gray in your hostel). You can also send websites and information directly to your Kindle, making it a convenient travel tool for maps and information when you don’t have wifi available. The battery life is much better than a tablet, too. You also don’t have to worry about theft when you’re out and about as much with Kindle as you do a phone, tablet, or laptop. We’d never give up our Kindles for their easy-to-carry entertainment and education value. It is the one thing we’d never leave home without.

Eagle Creek Packing Cubes: We didn’t have these for the first few years of our travel. We just thought it was overkill, too much prep for the free lifestyle we wanted to live. But once you’ve packed and unpacked a dozen or a hundred times, you’ll appreciate the convenience of quickly locating what you need.We were given these as a gift two years ago and now wonder how we traveled without them for so long. These are the best things in our packs now to help us get and stay organized. We can pack and unpack quickly, and if we stay in a place with limited storage we can still keep our clothes tidy – an important thing to remember when you don’t have everyday access to a washing machine or hangers.

Relationship

Babeland: Where to go to spice up your sex life and not feel icky? Babeland! When we hit a snag in the bedroom, we did something about it. Education and experimentation saved us from sliding into a sexless relationship, a common complaint among long-term couples. But it doesn’t have to be that way!
Babeland is a woman-owned store has been selling top quality products and information for women and couples since 1993. Visit their stores in Seattle or NYC, or go online to shop and learn in the privacy of your own home (seriously, tons of education here!). They ship everywhere, discreetly. Once you realize what’s available, you’ll know that sex only gets better with time. Click here to learn more about Babeland.

Starting a Business

Freedom Plan: People ask us all the time how we created our income to live this lifestyle. Other than our savings plan, which we wrote about in Dream Save Do, we honestly did not have a plan for making money. If we had, we’ve have made it a lot faster! That’s why we love our friend Natalie Sisson’s program. She is far more savvy than us at teaching what it takes to make a location-independent business work, and her coaching program is the best around. We recommend it without hesitation (and wish it had been around when we were stumbling through the steps to create our own business, delaying our success by YEARS due to just not having any kind of guideline).

In truth, we kinda hate her for not having this available back when we needed it. But we try not to get petty about it.
If you want to be able to live and work anywhere in the world, make more money, work less and have more freedom all while making an impact in the world then THIS is the program that will give you the action plan for making it happen. Click here to get started with the Freedom Plan™.

Regardless of what type of business you will be starting, one of the first actions you will need to take is what domain you will want to purchase and where to host it. For us, we have been using Bluehost for the last several years for each new business we’ve started. They provide good customer service, a great price, and you can be up and running with your new site in just a few minutes.

We recommend going with their Plus package as it gives you more options long-term and the ability to host multiple domains on a single hosting account. If you are struggling with where to host your new idea we highly recommend checking out Bluehost’s solutions as we are sure they are going to suit your new startup’s needs.

Writing & Publishing Books

Grammarly: I used to only rely on my editor to fix all my mistakes, which is the professional thing to do. But at that point, the book has been written, and I’m not learning anything about my writing when someone else fixes it. Not only that, but she’s not around to look at my blog posts, short stories, and even important emails I need to send.Grammarly was recommended by a writer friend, and it has been a lifesaver. Every scene I write goes through Grammarly, and I can see where I use the wrong terminology, mix up my prepositions, use dull words, or split my infinitives. Not only does it make me look better, it teaches me what I’m doing wrong in the moment so I can continuously improve my writing. Not only that, when the book does go to the editor or proofreaders, they are getting the cleanest copy I can provide, which means they can concentrate on polishing the book to perfection instead of handling my basic errors.
I can’t live without an editor, but I can make my editor’s work even better by giving all my work a pass through Grammarly first. And that makes the the finished product even better.
99 Designs: When we started our publishing business, one thing we knew for sure: neither one of us can design worth a damn. And we don’t have a huge budget for book covers, ads, or graphics. That’s why we love 99 Designs. For a set fee, we can tell a group of designers what we want, and those who are interested in working on the project submit concepts. We pick the ones we like, and our friends vote on the best one. It is the most convenient, cost-effective, and market-savvy way we know for people like us to get incredible book covers and graphics that help us sell our books. All five of The Late Bloomers Series books came from a designer we met through 99 Designs, as did the Married with Luggage book and the Dream Save Do book. It’s a no-brainer for us to go directly to 99 Designs when we have a new project.
If you need a professional design for your website, book, or other creative project but have a small budget, this is your solution. Click here to get started with your own project design.
Scrivener software: I do not know why we put this so far down on the list when it is the single most powerful tool I use on a daily basis. Scrivener transformed the way we write, revise, and publish books and courses. The product is powerful but simple to use. I can move scenes around with ease, make global changes to the document (ask me how many times I change minor character names!) with the click of a button, and change my formatting for publication with simple check boxes. This is truly the engine that runs our publishing business, and we wouldn’t be nearly so organized or efficient without it. Best of all, it’s damn cheap!
